CASE STUDY
Sophie was referred to the Reconnect program after several months of living away from home—initially couch-surfing with friends and then moving into her boyfriend’s house. She had grown up in her mother’s home but left due to ongoing conflict.
A few weeks into her engagement with Reconnect, Sophie discovered she was pregnant.
-
Despite her anxiety about where she would raise the baby—given that her boyfriend’s house was unstable and unsuitable for a child, and the long waiting lists for housing—Sophie managed to maintain her school engagement.
The Reconnect Worker and Sophie discussed strategies to improve communication and strengthen her relationship with her mother. Through these discussions, Sophie also became aware of local services and resources that could support her as a young mother. This newfound knowledge empowered her to make informed decisions about her future. Sophie eventually informed her mother about the pregnancy.
In response, Sophie and her mother reconnected, and her mother purchased a large caravan for Sophie and her baby to live in on her mother’s property. This gesture of support helped mend their relationship, allowing them to return to a place of love, open communication, and mutual support.
Through her experience with the Reconnect Program, Sophie learned that it is possible to forgive and move forward despite conflicts, and she is now better equipped to seek and utilise community resources to support her journey as a young mother.
