Tash is helping young Tasmanians find their Home Base.
Introducing Tash, our JumpStart Program Manager at Home Base.
Tash supports young people on our JumpStart program. Whether they are calling to apply, currently in the program or ready to exit, Tash provides friendly services to help them navigate their rental journey.
The JumpStart program is a Home Base initiative that began in July 2023, to help young people bridge the gap between what the rent is, and what is affordable based on their earnings.
Our JumpStart program offers up to $50 per week subsidy to cover the 'gap' based on their earnings and rent. The program is a way for young people up to 25 years of age to live independently while working, studying, or learning a trade.
When asked what Tash enjoys working in this role, her quick response is “Working with young people!”
“Young people are resilient and resourceful. By the time they’ve reached me, they have researched the options available to them and worked out where they need to go and then get in contact with us.”
When applying for JumpStart the young person could already be renting or looking to start their rental journey in a share house, with a partner or on their own.
If they are moving in with someone else, that person can also apply and see if they qualify for a subsidy, which could mean more rental support for your household.
“One of the most satisfying parts of my role is seeing people progress on their journey. When they call and let me know that they’ve been approved for a rental is the best, after all the work they’ve put in, I simply want to give out all the high fives!”
“It’s also heartwarming to see property owners and real estate agents give young people a chance. From what I’ve seen they make great tenants as they’re committed to learning how to be a good tenant which makes them open to feedback and putting in the work to do well.”
“They just need a place to start and someone in their corner!”
Since JumpStart began, we’ve supported 21 young people, and we currently have 15 receiving a subsidy. The support is available for up to 12 months and as the participants income increases, the amount of subsidy decreases.
The aim of the program is to support young Tasmanians into a pathway of independent living.
“I’ve seen first-hand that young renters want to do well. They want to set themselves up to succeed. Investing in them today, is investing in Tasmania’s future!”
